Three Short Walks Continued,
By: Alan & Kathleen Somerville.
We planned to walked the final stage during the
August Bank Holiday which was eagerly awaited and again the section was 42 miles, with
three days to do it.
The first 10 miles to Greenhead was a tricky path
finding exercise, then on the Roman Wall section the path made itself felt on both the
short rises and drops.
On through the Wark Forest where two sections needs
careful attention. Then some real nice farmland tracks, took us over Shittlington Crags to
Bellingham to the bus home, concluding our final section of the Pennine Way.
At many places, en route, Kinder, Bleaklaw and the
like,
Kathleen repeated, "I’ll never be back here again'.
I’m not so sure; it has called others back,
One stockbroker type chap we met treats it like a
golf course, doing three days at a time and taking about six weeks to do it. He carried no
kit or food and was on his third round, as it were.
Of course, we did return! during a rare heat wave
summer, when we did the full Pennine Way in one stretch, considered by some as Original
Lightweight Camping.
Camping under the stars without a tent.
Is it your turn now?
