Bailey is a complete Holiday Hamlet hidden away between the Roman Wall and the Scottish Border, ideal for a quiet low mileage vacation.

Perfectly located to visit the Carlisle, Northern Pennines, Hadrians Wall and north over the Border.

If you are interested in history there's plenty for you here. Set in the 'Debatable Lands', Bailey was once a wild and dangerous place where the infamous Border Reivers warred for 350 years.

Their story is vividly brought to life at Carlisle's Tullie House Museum and interpretation centres at nearby Newcastleton and Bewcastle.

Also at Bewcastle are the remains of a castle, the finest example of an Anglo‑Saxon cross in Britain, and the remains of a Roman fort where 2,000 soldiers once billeted.

Further south is Birdoswald Roman Fort interactive visitor centre, impressive Hadrian’s Wall and Lanercost Priory.

Much of the accommodation in Bailey is on working farms where Traditional breeds can be seen such as black cattle and blackface sheep. Otters inhabit the river, deer and badger and red squirrels can be seen the woodlands.

Bailey offers a wide choice of activities. Miles of footpaths, bridleways and forest trails, make it a safe and relaxing place to explore without a car. Special wildflower and nature trails guide you to some of the areas hidden treasures.

Cycle hire is available to follow the Reivers Cycle Route, (a spur of the Coast to Coast cycle route) plus a spur of the Eden Valley Circular cycle route pass through Bailey.

Walking is the best way to appreciate Bailey's peace and quiet ‑ you're more likely to encounter a deer than other walkers. Plus the quiet countryside provides the perfect opportunity to do some serious bird watching undisturbed.

There are well equipped trekking centres in the area providing accompanied trekking and lessons, plus stabling if you want to give your own horse a holiday.

If you feel like trying something more expressive, arts and crafts weekends run throughout the year at nearby Bewcastle.
